Open Circle Events:

Dorothy Hunt ~ Clarity, Conditioning, and Transformation: pre-retreat taster event

In the words of Zen master Dogen:

ÒThose who have great realization of delusion are buddhas;

those who are greatly deluded about realization are sentient beings.ÓÊÊ

(from Genjo Koan)

This event is a ÒtasteÓ of the upcoming weekend retreat, complimentary for retreat registrants, also available as a standalone experience. It can be seen as part of the longer retreat format, or simply as an opportunity to familiarize yourself with Dorothy, her teaching style, and the topic before deciding whether to join the weekend retreat.

Dorothy will preview what you might expect from the upcoming two-day retreat. There will be a guided meditation and an overview of the topic: Clarity, Conditioning and Transformation.

Everyone deals with conditioning, but when we stop judging that it should not be here and become curious about its energies rather than our well-worn, (and often intellectually analyzed) narrative based on a separate Òself,” there is an opportunity to meet conditioning with clear seeing rather than resistance. This inherently open, aware, and compassionate clarity begins to transform our relationship to conditioning, whether or not it continues to arise.Ê Freedom does not require being rid of anything that exists in the wholeness of being, from this perspective.Ê And yet, seeing the myriad ways the conditioned mind returns us to an egoic trance state is part of the ongoing-ness of seeing through illusion. No judgment and a good bit of humor around this Òhuman thingÓ can help tremendously!

The deep work of spiritual transformation begins when we have lost our fascination with both spiritual entertainment and polishing egos.Ê We become unhooked from the fantasy of a perfected Òself” and become more interested in authenticity and integrity, realizing there is no separate someone to be Òonly Awareness.Ó Yet what is awake and aware is ever-present and never separate from the moment as it is.

Dorothy HuntÊcurrently serves as Spiritual Director of Moon Mountain Sangha, teaching at the request and in the spiritual lineage of Adyashanti. The flavor of her teaching blends Advaita and Zen with a deep welcoming of the human expressions of the Mystery. Dorothy is the founder of the San Francisco Center for Meditation and Psychotherapy, and practiced psychotherapy from 1967 until her retirement in 2020.Ê She is the author of Only This!, Leaves from Moon Mountain, and Ending the Search: From Spiritual Ambition to the Heart of Awareness. In addition, she is a contributing author to two books on Nondual Wisdom and Psychotherapy, and the editor of Love: A Fruit Always in Season.

Presently, Dorothy offers satsang and retreats via Zoom, and dokusan by phone. For more information, please visit www.dorothyhunt.org

We offer our events by donation or sliding scale with scholarships available to make them as accessible as possible. We still however have many expenses to pay and therefore we ask that you contribute as much as you can comfortably afford for an event. Most of the funds are paid directly to the teacher. The remainder goes towards Open Circle’s expenses so that we can keep our platform in operation. Your generosity also helps cover any scholarships we offer to those unable to pay within the sliding scale.
