What is Non-Duality?
Non-duality is the English translation of the Sanskrit word advaita, and literally means “not two”. It is the recognition found at the mystic core of all great traditions: that there is a single, undivided reality connecting all of existence.
At Open Circle, we approach this timeless truth not as a method of escape from the world, but as the vital nectar that nourishes our daily lives. We see it as the healing force that dissolves the illusion of separation, allowing us to meet our humanity with presence and grace. Ultimately, this profound connection overflows into the world, empowering us to engage fully with life through authentic compassion, active participation, and a heartfelt expression of truth and love.

Non-duality is living profoundly wide open and as simple as the dirt.
John Prendergast
Reality is ultimately seamless. Although the human mind constructs an apparent inside self and outside world, a “me” and a “you’ (or an it), life and its many appearances are essentially undivided, not-two. As we disidentify from the conditioned body/mind, and recognize our true nature, this understanding, initially conceptual, becomes a visceral, living reality.
Ishtar Howell
Non-duality is the lived experience of Wholeness, in which the individual has melted into Wholeness, Wholeness suffuses the person, and Wholeness permeates every nook and cranny of life.

Ishita Sharma
Non-duality is the direct experience of Reality.
Dorothy Hunt
Nothing “other,” nothing excluded; the realization that the infinite mystery and all finite manifestations are “not-two.” Timelessness/time, absolute/relative, divine/human, form/emptiness—all dualities collapse into an ultimately unnameable source that cannot be known by thought yet is awake and undivided from any experience or expression. Love seems to be its first movement.
Gail Brenner
Non-duality is the name given to the spiritual teaching that points to the nature of reality that cannot be described in words. It’s the direct knowing of empty, boundless awareness, beyond space and time, that can inform and inspire the moments of our everyday lives.

Louise Kay
Non-duality refers to the absolute nature of reality as oneness. This oneness transcends the illusion of separation between the self and the world and includes the recognition that all forms and experiences arise from the same source of consciousness. Non-duality is not just a concept to understand intellectually but an experiential realization of the unified nature of existence.
Shakti Caterina Maggi
Non-duality is the description of the true nature of life. The world is a representation of One Consciousness that embodies itself as people, events, thoughts, and feelings, including even the most subtle dimensions of being. Although we see multiplicity, the true substance of everything is only one Being, and that is the real you. Hidden in plain sight, the true meaning of life is the recognition of this unity and the living of it. When this realization approaches, our attachment to a separate point of view ignites the fear of death in us. Once this fear is witnessed and dissolved into the conscious recognition of oneness, all apparent obstacles are transcended, and we consciously rest as what we have always already been: one Being.

Lynn Marie Lumiere
Non-duality includes all of existence, not as fragmented or separate parts, but as one undivided whole—the singularity of the actual now moment. We cannot awaken to our essential nature without also awakening all levels of our human system—somatic, emotional, psychological, relational, and spiritual. If we awaken to the presence of being while the body-mind remains braced against perceived threat through blocked emotions, a dysregulated nervous system, or beliefs rooted in deficiency, that awakening is not yet nondual or embodied. Freedom cannot exist in any one part of the system; it must include our wholeness, undivided.
Arian Mateo
Non-duality is not a thing. It is experience in its natural purity, free from separation. Nothing more, nothing less.

Jeff Foster
Real nonduality is not an escape from the body or the world. It is the actual meeting of spirit and flesh. It is the place where awareness and action are not separate at all, where compassion is no longer a concept, where love actually stands up instead of dissociating or detaching.

Non-duality is the backdrop to it all. Beyond the whole dance of experience, is a knowing of whatever is here. This is not known in the mind. This is not understood or grasped by thinking or believing. This is also not about having a particular experience or feeling. Non-duality is beyond all of this. It is that that is aware of reading these words, and writing them. It is that that you truly are, beyond any story of who you think you are. Non-duality is beyond the whole play of duality, and yet includes and is not separate from what appears to be duality. But really Non-duality is just a limited word that can never express the limitless nature of who You truly are. The word is simply a pointer to what is beyond all the words.
