TEACHER BIOGRAPHY
Dorothy Hunt
Dorothy serves as spiritual director of Moon Mountain Sangha, teaching at the request and in the spiritual lineage of Adyashanti, who invited her to share the dharma in 2004.
Dorothy is the founder of the San Francisco Center for Meditation and Psychotherapy, and practiced psychotherapy from 1967 until her retirement in 2021. She is the author of Only This!, Leaves from Moon Mountain, and Ending the Search: from Spiritual Ambition to the Heart of Awareness, as well as chapters in two volumes exploring Nondual Wisdom and Psychotherapy: The Sacred Mirror and Listening from the Heart of Silence. Her poetry has appeared in journals, books, and songs, and she is a featured spiritual teacher in the book, Ordinary Women, Extraordinary Wisdom.
Dorothy has a long and deep connection to the teachings of Ramana Maharshi and the path of Self-Inquiry, as well as the non-dual teachings of Zen, Advaita, and the Christian mystics. In meeting Adyashanti she was invited beyond identification with either the absolute or relative dimensions of Being, discovering the undivided freedom of what is timelessly awake in each of us regardless of the changing faces of experience. Her teaching points beyond traditions, practices, and ideas to the ever-present Mystery that is open, compassionate, and never separate from the moment as it is.
In her words, “The Awakeness we are is nowhere else than here and now. We can neither gain it by our seeking, nor lose it in our confusion. We can only realize we are the Mystery in its undivided Totality, awake and intimate with all expressions of Itself.”
Dorothy lives in San Francisco, and is a mother and a grandmother. She offers satsang, retreats, and private meetings in the San Francisco Bay area and elsewhere by invitation.

“Dorothy’s teachings are warm and loving, and I felt at ease.”
This retreat was very peaceful and calming. A container was immediately created and felt in a deep sense. Dorothy’s teachings are warm and loving, and I felt at ease. It was a very special retreat for me.

“I love how normal yet special she can make the path(less)truth and our growth.”
This retreat has been life-changing to me. . . This was my first time seeing my teacher, Dorothy, in person. I love how normal yet special she can make the path(less)truth and our growth. Zen is not for sissies, and it was a kind sword, sharp enough to dissect, but not a dull blade that left scars.

“Her meditations guide us to welcome into the heart what we may have excluded.”
I’m profoundly grateful for Dorothy’s teachings and the impact they’ve had on my life. A consistent theme in her teaching is that everything is welcome in the vast heart of being. Her meditations guide us to welcome into the heart what we may have excluded, allowing them to return to the wholeness of our being. She emphasizes that the path is about coming home and taking a seat in yourself. In her interactions with students, including myself, she expresses a kindness and care that feels like watching love in motion. She has been a great blessing in my life.
