TEACHER BIOGRAPHY

John Prendergast

John Prendergast, Ph.D., is a spiritual teacher, retired Adjunct Professor of Psychology at California Institute of Integral Studies, where he taught masters-level counseling students for 23 years, and a retired psychotherapist.

He is the author of Your Deepest Ground (2025), The Deep Heart (2019), and In Touch (2015).

He is also the senior editor of The Sacred Mirror (with Peter Fenner and Sheila Krystal, 2003) and Listening from the Heart of Silence (with Ken Bradford, 2007). He was the co-founder (with Peter Fenner) of the Conference on Non-dual Wisdom and Psychology, and the founder and editor of the online journal Undivided.

John’s approach is characterized by inner and relational attunement, welcoming experience into Presence, and questioning core limiting beliefs via meditative inquiry. While acknowledging the need to transcend one’s personal narrative, he emphasizes allowing awake awareness to gradually infuse deeper emotional and instinctual levels of personal conditioning. This imminent approach accents embodying awareness in the everyday life of relationships and work, as well as creatively responding to larger collective forces such as climate disruption and social injustice.

John studied closely for many years with the European sage, Jean Klein, as well as with Adyashanti, who offered him dharma transmission in 2023. Earlier, he was also invited to teach by Dorothy Hunt.

He teaches regularly online and co-leads residential retreats with his wife, Christiane, in the U.S. and Europe. He also offers one-off or highly irregular online spiritual mentoring sessions by donation, although his wait-list is very long and sometimes closed.
